7 & 9pm :: Paul Warburton / Don Grusin :: $15

Paul's influences include Red Mitchell, Jim Hall, Bill Evans and Scott LaFaro. The bass lured Paul in at the tender age of fifteen.  Dick, his half-brother, often left his bass at Paul's house while doing business in the city.  Paul innocently picked up the bass and started down a path he would follow for the rest of his life.  Paul could naturally play by ear and is completely self-taught.  He learned finger positions by looking at pictures of Ray Brown and other bassists on the backs of albums in record stores.  Paul graduated from East High School, in Denver, 1959.  He immediately began to play for Effie, "The Blonde Tigress of the Keyboard" at the famous Senate Lounge in Downtown Denver.  His brother had to substitute for him so he could attend his High School Graduation Exercises.

Warburton became a mainstay of the Jazz Scene in Denver.  He has since played with almost every jazz great in locations throughout the United States and around the world.  His brief, unrecorded work with the Bill E vans T rio (with Philly Joe Jones on drums) in 1965 has esta blished his name firmly in the world of jazz bassists.

  From Pepper Adams to Phil Woods, Paul has worked with hundreds of the Jazz Greats over the past fifty years.  He has toured extensively in the U.S., Europe and Japan with such celebrated stars as Stan Getz, Anita O'Day, Pharaoh Sanders, Richie Cole, Cal Tjader and many others. He was a member of the Richie Cole quartet and the Dick Hindman trio for many years.

Paul plays a Joseph Bohmann, five string bass, circa 1888, which is tuned to a low B.    The bass was purchased from the estate of Mr. Bohmann, the maker.  The bass had never been played; Paul is the original and only player of this unique instrument.

 To quote Jazz impressario Dick G ibson on Paul Warburton: "The most important Jazz musician to come out of Denver since Paul Quinichette left Denver to join Jay McShann in 1942".

Don Grusin, born and raised in Colorado, is a composer, producer, arranger, and keyboardist. He had the great pleasure of cutting his jazz teeth with Paul Warburton when they were teenagers and later at the famous Senate lounge with Paul and other luminaries like Zoot Sims, Jim Hall. He holds a Masters Degree in Economics from the University of Colorado and taught as a Fulbright professor in Mexico and in the U.S. before choosing to enter the music business full-time after joining Quincy Jones' band for a Japan-U.S. tour in the mid 1970s.

The creative sparkplug for the acclaimed fusion ensemble Friendship, Don has recorded and produced scores of albums, including Ernie Watts' Grammy-winning CD entitled Musican , and received another Grammy this past year for his contribution to Paul Winter's CD, Crestone . His latest CD, Piano in Venice , is a piano-based collection of
melodies and grooves inspired by the moods of the community of Venice Beach CA.

Grusin divides his time between recording international projects in UK,
Brasil, Japan, and teaching his multidisciplinary course at the ATLAS
Institute at the University of Colorado, called World Music Video as Catalyst for Social Change . This class was created in 2008 to incorporate such diverse fields as economics, music, film, ethnography, journalism, environmental design, and art to produce videos as educational and marketing tools leading to greater global social awareness and action.
