7 & 9pm :: Lisa Engelken - "Caravan" CD Release :: $10. Featuring Lisa on vocals, Gabe Mervine - trumpet, Steve Denny - piano, Marty Kenney - bass, and Ben Waters - drums.
LISA ENGELKEN is a fearless singer and tonic performing artist. With horn-like rhythmic scatting and tonal clarity, Lisa’s “Mata Hari vocals” (Village Voice) put a chill back into jazz singing. Lisa hails from the Kansas plains: part freight train, part tumbleweed, ENGELKEN alternately locomotes and floats through tunes. Training in classical voice & theatre couldn’t polish off the rough edges, as she wields an impressive 3-octave range intensified by sheer joy, then crankiness, sadness and irony. Lisa’s fluency in Italian inspires her to reference romance languages & repertoire. She rides a rollercoaster through a myriad of moods and vocal styles, spicing her tunes with Portuguese, French, Spanish and Italian.
“Thee best female vocalist I’ve heard this year…maybe for last year, too.” –Russ Haines-WWSP-Stevens Point, WI
“…it is obvious that [Lisa] is already a major jazz singer. To her credit, she does not sound like any of her predecessors even though she has obviously learned from those who came before her. Fans of jazz singing who enjoy unpredictable versions of standards will want Caravan." - Scott Yanow, Los Angeles Jazz Scene April 2010
“Bold, lush, exotic and just a little bit dangerous, like waves of sound and heat: Evel Knievel and Janis Joplin. Like Evel, she is a fearless daredevil, but never reckless, knowing exactly whether her voice can jump through a ring of fire and over 30 elephants- -or whether it can go 31. And like Janis, she gives every ounce of herself onstage.” - Erin Gray, columnist for the Monterey Herald
