The Dizzy Room
Entr'acte
Featuring Patrick Lee (piano), Andrew Hoyle (drums), and John Grisgby (bass) :: $5
Though their moniker’s literal translation is “between the acts,” their music is anything but incidental and it is difficult to dismiss. Rather than an intermission filler, Entr’acte bulges out of the stage, redoubtable, but still elegant. Their repertoire spans a timeline dating as far back as the stride piano sounds of Fats Waller with stops along the way that feature modern interpretations of classics like Autumn Leaves and not surprisingly, a few Herbie Hancock tunes.
Expect to hear a prodigious amount of original music, as each member is a talented composer in their own right. The trio explores each others works with a common thread to guide them, and though the final product is indeed a creation of three improvising minds, after a few shows each member’s style and influences become more apparent. Whether it’s a rhythmically shifting Hoyle piece or a raw and aggressive Grigsby tune or a harmonically complex Lee composition, the music never settles into complacency.
